Parent Communication
First Placement
February 7, 2011
Dear First Grade Parents,
My name is Caroline Mobley and I am a teacher candidate from the University of Alabama Huntsville. For the next three weeks, I will be working with your child on reading fluency. Each Monday, I will send a reading passage and a time log home in a fluency folder. Please read this passage with your child at least two times, but more often if you can. Also, have your child read the passage back to you. Please sign the time log each evening and return the folder to school on Fridays. The more practice your child has reading, the more fluent he or she will become.
A couple of reading activities that are beneficial for increasing reading fluency are choral reading where you and your child read the passage in unison out loud, and echo reading where you read a few lines out loud and your child echoes what you have read.
If you have any questions, please contact me at Monte Sano Elementary or you may contact my cooperating teacher, Mrs. Brotherton at (256) 428-7300.
Sincerely,
Caroline J. Mobley

Dear Parents,
I wanted to share the results of your child’s fluency for the passage titled ________________________. During the first timed reading, your child read ________ words per minute. The first timing was a “cold” timing which means that your child did not practice prior to reading the passage. Your child read ________ words per minute during the second timing after having an opportunity to practice reading the passage. For the third timing, your child read _________ words per minute after practicing reading the passage more often during the week. The more your child reads a passage, the more fluent he or she will become. I have attached a new passage for this week titled________________________. Thank you for taking the time to read with your child each evening.
Sincerely,
Caroline Mobley

Description and Rationale: These are letters I sent to the parents of my first grade students in my collaborative placement. These letters were part of my fluency unit that I created. I felt that it was important to inform the parents that their child would be receiving extra practice with their fluency. I also beleive that it is especially important to continue the commuciation throughout the duration of the unit.
Reflection: One of the requirements of my unit was for the students to practice reading a passage with someone at home each evening. In order for this to be successful, I needed to communicate with the parents what my expectations were of their child with regards to the fluency unit. I also believe that constant communication with parents is very important and that is the reason why I sent home a letter each week reporting their child's progress.
